The perfumer is an artist who strives to create perfumes. But we must have a more precise definition of perfume beforehand. We need to keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfume in nature, rather we just encounter different smells -whether good or bad-. Perfumes are crafted by mixing and combining various chemicals that are aromatic or fragrant.

Perfume

Perfibo strongly believes that there is an empty void in common art categories when it comes to perfumes; or in other words, perfumes can be considered a unique form of art. When humans encounter any beautiful entity, they will have a natural reaction based on their senses, as such works of art not only provide intellectual content and insight but also invoke emotions in human beings. Just as a human might receive a beautiful picture via the eyes or a piece of music via the ears and experience joy after processing the information in the brain; perfumes, just like any other work of art, can be received via the nose then quickly invoke emotions in the recipient.

What is perfume and who is a perfumer?

The perfumer is an artist who strives to create perfumes. But we must have a more precise definition of perfume beforehand. We need to keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfume in nature, rather we just encounter different smells -whether good or bad-. Perfumes are crafted by mixing and combining various chemicals that are aromatic or fragrant.

The relation of proportion in beauty, based on aesthetic and perfume:

A perfume, which is the result of a perfumer’s innovation, is an arrangement of aromas that invokes positive emotions in humans.

If one gets some acacia extract, they have not created art and what they now possess is nothing more than the scent of acacia which is not its definition as art. But if they manage to combine it with oceanic scent or maybe some grass in the most basic form, they have created a relatively new work of art that can motivate the audience or even enlighten them. Perfumes consist of different notes: just like a motif in music, or even a complete piece that is performed and received within a specific duration. We can even define topics such as rhythm, harmony, and form for perfumes.
Even though the audience reaches an immediate understanding when encountering perfumes -visual or mental-; perfume is like the narrator of a story: The initial notes which are stronger, are often smelled first and depending on the artist’s design and available facilities, the middle notes which could be completely different are perceived in a specific duration and have a different effect on the audience and eventually the final notes are encountered in a longer duration. The audience’s emotions are invoked in three acts via the sense of smell. Even abstract concepts can be conveyed via the specific arrangement of aromas and smells.

Different notes-smells in fact-are invisible but can be easily received and give personality and life to the presume.

The smell of Mary’s flower, lavender, fruits such as lemons, oranges and bergamots, flower oils and strong spices such as lemongrass, geraniums, rose, ylang-ylang, neroli, jasmine, coriander, nutmeg, true cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, pine, rosemary, juniper, leather, oceanic scent, incense, wood, Ziziphus Spina-Christi, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, Indian mint, oak and must, or even the scent of blood, metals, forest, soil, smoke and etc. are aromas and smells that can be considered the basic elements for creating a carefully engineered arrangement to create a work of art known as perfume. Just like a piece of music, a perfume as a work of art does not necessarily have to invoke a positive emotion, it can, justifiably, narrate an unpleasant story.

A perfume can invoke a nostalgic feeling or tap into a person’s or people’s subconscious mind, but it would be better to affect the audience deeply and that depends on the artist’s innovative presentation. Perfumes should carry messages and invoke emotions that were not previously experienced.

A perfume, on a sunny summer day, can invite the audience to a mountain, as they smell the wind carrying the scent of pennyroyal and thymes or even the smell of sheep and cow manure in the suburbs. Or in the coldest hours of the coldest season, invite the audience to a sunny and pleasant day on the beach or a colorful forest in autumn next to a warm campfire. Either way, there is so much to say regarding perfumes as a separate category of art.

When we speak about proportionality, undoubtedly, it is a relationship between mathematics, numbers, and patterns so once again we are reminded of Fibonacci. What kind of perfume do you think, as a perfumer, Fibonacci would have made based on his beliefs and views? Can the world of mathematics create a precise and bright relationship with this new medium based on Perfibo’s definitions?
